What is Model United Nations?
Model UN is a dynamic simulation conference where students act as delegates of UN Member States. Student delegates represent their state as diplomats and role play the types of negotiation and diplomacy that occurs between ambassadors to the UN. They debate, draft resolutions, and negotiate solutions to a critical global issue outlined in an annual Scenario.
Each delegation consists of two high school students. Delegations are led by high school faculty advisers who lead Model UN after school clubs.
In November, student delegates participate in a Training Day that prepares them for the March conference. Between November and March, they research their state, write a position paper, and craft a preliminary statement that they present to the General Assembly in March.
At the March conference, student delegates attempt to gain support from other delegations for their policy solutions. They participate in committee meetings and General Assembly debates, and they vote on each other’s resolutions.
This hands-on experience enhances critical thinking, public speaking, and diplomacy skills, shaping young leaders into informed global citizens. By fostering collaboration and leadership, students gain an appreciation for diverse viewpoints and a sense of responsibility for international cooperation and peace.
