What are SDG Groups?
SDGs stand for Sustainable Development Goals, a set of 17 global objectives established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The SDGs aim to address the world's most pressing challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. These goals provide a universal framework for all countries to work towards sustainable development in a balanced and inclusive way. Some key SDGs include ending poverty, ensuring quality education, achieving gender equality, and promoting clean energy.
During Model UN Training Day, students are divided into small groups led by a TU volunteer. The groups read a short news article about a current event related to one of the SDGs. The TU volunteer leads a group discussion about the SDG, the current event, and how they fit into the UN guiding principles. SDG group members have the chance to share ideas, ask questions, and even brainstorm solutions. SDG groups increase student familiarity with foundational UN principles, while also encouraging delegates to consider the complex and interconnected nature of global issues.
